Supporting Cure JM: A Grandparent’s Guide to Making a Difference

As grandparents, your love and support are the bedrock of your family’s strength. You provide wisdom, guidance, and an abundance of love, all of which make an incredible impact on your grandchildren’s lives. At Cure JM Foundation, we recognize and appreciate the vital role you play in your families and in our community. Many of our most dedicated supporters are grandparents like you, who are committed to making a brighter future for all children affected by juvenile myositis (JM).

There are several meaningful ways you can contribute to Cure JM Foundation, each with its own unique benefits. Your generosity can help fund critical research, help your grandchild get the best care, and bring us closer to finding a cure for JM. Here’s how you can make a lasting impact:

1. Bequests: Leaving a Legacy of Hope

One of the most powerful ways you can support Cure JM Foundation is by including us in your will or living trust. A bequest allows you to leave a lasting legacy that will benefit generations to come. Whether you choose to designate a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or a particular asset, your bequest will make a profound difference in our fight against JM.

Including Cure JM in your estate plans is a simple process. You can work with your attorney to add a provision in your will or trust that specifies your gift to Cure JM Foundation. It’s a beautiful way to ensure that your legacy of love and compassion continues to make an impact long into the future.  Should you desire to be recognized for your bequest, please inform Betsy Leon, Grandparent Support Coordinator, at info@curejm.org.

2. Minimum Required Distributions from Your IRA

If you are 70½ years old or older, you can take advantage of a smart and tax-efficient way to give. By directing your annual Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to Cure JM Foundation, you can make a significant donation while also reducing your taxable income. This type of contribution is known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD).

Not only does this method of giving support our mission, but it also allows you to fulfill your RMD obligation while potentially lowering your tax burden. It’s a win-win that helps us continue our vital work and provides you with a tax-efficient way to give back.  To send a RMD to Cure JM please give this information to your financial advisor or brokerage account: Checks can be made out to Cure JM and mailed directly to the bank at Cure JM, P.O. Box 45768, Baltimore, MD 21297. Cure JM’s tax ID is 35-2222262. For any questions or further information, please contact Betsy Leon at info@curejm.org or (202) 596-6267.

3. Making a Direct Donation

Of course, you can always make a direct donation to Cure JM Foundation at any time. Every gift, no matter the size, makes a difference. Whether you’re able to give a one-time gift or prefer to set up a recurring donation, your generosity helps us fund groundbreaking research and provide essential support to families facing JM.  Gifts can be made at www.curejm.org/donate

4. Honor and Memorial Gifts

Another meaningful way to give is by making a donation in honor or memory of a loved one. This type of gift is a beautiful way to celebrate special occasions or to remember someone dear to you. When you make an honor or memorial gift, we will send a special acknowledgment to the person or family you designate, letting them know of your thoughtful gesture.

Your Gift Matters

No matter how you choose to give, your support of Cure JM Foundation has a direct impact on the lives of children and families affected by juvenile myositis. You’re helping to fund research that brings us closer to a cure, helping kids get the best care, providing resources and support to families, and ensuring that every child with JM has the chance to live a full, healthy life.

We are deeply grateful for your continued support and generosity. Your contributions, whether through bequests, IRA distributions, or direct donations, are making a real difference in our mission to find a cure for JM.

If you have any questions about how to include Cure JM Foundation in your estate plans or how to make a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your IRA, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’re here to help you explore the giving options that best align with your goals and values.

Together, we can create a future free from juvenile myositis. Thank you for being a beacon of hope for all of our families.

Alex Hackney’s Story

Despite battling juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) as a child, Alex Hackney never envisioned becoming a marathon runner, let alone completing prestigious races like the Chicago and New York Marathons. With over 15 years of grappling with JDM, Alex recently completing her third marathon and found closure and perspective in Chicago.
