Dr. Stephen J. Balevic is a distinguished adult and pediatric rheumatologist at Duke University, specializing in the care of patients with a wide array of autoimmune and rheumatic diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, vasculitis, and sarcoidosis. He holds board certifications in internal medicine, rheumatology, general pediatrics, and pediatric rheumatology.
Dr. Balevic earned his medical degree from Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine in 2010. He completed a combined residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina from 2010 to 2014, followed by dual fellowships in adult and pediatric rheumatology at Duke University Medical Center between 2014 and 2018. Furthering his expertise, he obtained a PhD in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Eshelman School of Pharmacy.
In his clinical practice, Dr. Balevic utilizes musculoskeletal ultrasound to enhance diagnosis and treatment decisions at the bedside, providing real-time insights into patients’ conditions. His research interests focus on precision medicine and pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics, aiming to optimize drug dosing and therapeutic outcomes in vulnerable populations. He serves as the Associate Director of Pharmacometrics at the Duke Clinical Research Institute and as the Assistant Scientific Director for the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA) Registry.
Dr. Balevic’s contributions to the field have been recognized with the Young Physician-Scientist Award from the American Society for Clinical Investigation in 2023, underscoring his commitment to advancing rheumatologic care through research and clinical excellence.
