Cure JM Foundation 2014 Mason Miracle Award

Presented to Sue Carpenter by Shari Hume, Cure JM Co-Founder

Kim, Sue and and Kristen Carpenter

Mason Smedley

Two years ago, Cure JM established a special award in memory of Mason Smedley, called The Mason’s Miracle Award. Mason was, and continues to be, an inspiration to everyone.

He showed great courage and strength in his battle with JM; and despite his challenges, he had an amazing sense of humor; and his charm instantly won over everyone he met.

He was, and will always be, a true hero and has made a difference in countless lives. This award is now given annually to someone who carries on the spirit of Mason, and demonstrates the unfaltering courage, optimism and perseverance that Mason showed us all.

I am honored tonight to present this award to an individual who possesses all of these qualities. She has endured a life of numerous personal and family medical challenges, but always comes through them stronger and still manages to keep a positive outlook.

She is an anchor of support for our entire JM community. Her heart and soul are fueled by love and giving. If you need someone to talk to, this is the shoulder you want to lean on.

“She is an angel sent from heaven above and Mason would be very proud to see her get this award!”

Kristen Smedley

She serves as a Cure JM Family Support Network representative for the Western states, and spends a lot of her time helping families just receiving a JM diagnosis. She takes families who are suffering out of the darkness and into the light.

This JM mom shares her warmth in other ways too…to be exact…98 other ways! She has made 98 quilts for children battling JM.  She even made one for Mason. She took the time to get to know Mason through his parents, and made a quilt that meant the world to him. It was truly a labor of love.

The definition of “quilting” is “to join or stitch together”, which is exactly what this individual has done for the JM community, as each quilt and each word of support is given with love; and continues to join the JM families closer together.

Mason’s mom, Kristen Smedley said, “She is an angel sent from heaven above and Mason would be very proud to see her get this award!”

For Mason, I know you’re watching, and I am honored to present your award, The Mason’s Miracle Award to Sue Carpenter.
