Cure JM Foundation 2018 National Family Conference Recap

Nutrition and Exercise Panel

This panel was led by a registered dietician Julie Shevlin, MS, RDN, CD (also a JM mom) and Doctor of Physical Therapy Josh Woolstenhulme. It explored the following questions:

  • What are some optimal foods for children with JM?
  • How to handle steroid cravings?
  • How to eat healthfully with all the side effects of the medications?
  • What about a gluten-free diet? Anti-inflammatory diet?
  • Are competitive sports safe for my child?
  • Are there exercises my child can do to improve their outcome?

The discussion explored how to apply the nutrition recommendations sometimes provided by hospitals and dieticians and make them work for a family in the 'real world.' The attendees also learned what worked for other JM families.

Explains Julie, “As parents, one of the greatest and most challenging role is feeding our children. How we approach this responsibility has a lifelong impact on our child's health. Julie said. “The goal of this session was to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining a healthy, regular time together enjoying food, family, and growing healthy children as a result.”
