Coping for Caregivers 101

CaregiversCoping with a life-altering diagnosis like Juvenile Myositis is difficult for the whole family. In this session, facilitators explored some common emotional and physical side effects of caring for a child with a chronic disease. Carol Schwartz is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and led the session. She offered attendees practical tips and taught real-world coping strategies.

“The session emphasized the importance of self-care as a means to avoid caregiver burnout. Caregiving for kids with JDM is generally an on-going process and the caregiver must find ways to take care of oneself,” Carol said.

“I use the metaphor of putting on your own oxygen mask on the plane before putting on your child’s. Caregivers need to be open to asking for and accepting help from others, find stress reduction techniques, seek supportive counseling when necessary, exercise, sleep, etc. Also, it is very important to make time for yourself, your spouse and your other children, even if that means getting respite care to do so.”
