Cure JM 2013 Annual Conference and Fundraiser

Fundraising Tips and Sample Communications

Fundraising Tips

If you have never raised money before for a similar event, please do not feel overwhelmed.  We are providing some ideas based on efforts that have proven to be very successful.

  1. Remember that you are raising money for a very rare disease that many people do not know it exists.  We encourage you to reach as broad as you can with your fundraising efforts.  Even if someone does not want to sponsor you by making a donation, we see this as a great way of creating awareness of this disease.   Do not be afraid to ask for donations….you may be very surprised about how much people really want to help a good cause!
  2. Send out letters and emails to friends, family, neighbors and co-workers to inform them of your involvement with the Cure JM Team and the XSport Fitness Rock 'n' Roll Chicago Half Marathon and Mini Marathon. Provide your personalized donation form that explains Juvenile Myositis, a link to your personalized fundraising page and add a personal note about your personal involvement.
Note:  If you are sending out hard copies of the donation flyers, sending an addressed envelope with the Cure JM address will significantly increase the percentage of people who will make a donation.  Add a stamp to that envelope and it will make it even more convenient to make a donation.  Many people will appreciate the convenience and will just hate to waste a stamp.  Once again, this has proven to increase the overall effectiveness of fundraising efforts!

  3. Consider asking companies you frequently give business to and work with often.  Many companies actually budget a certain amount of tax deductible “good will” or donations to support their community. Talk or write to these companies, explain your involvement and fundraising goals and request a donation. You might be very surprised about their willingness and interest to support you and a worthy cause.
  4. Ask local businesses if they will help you with your fundraising efforts by donating a percentage of their revenues on a designed Cure JM day or if they will put up your flyer and a jar for collection of donations.  This approach has been very successful for some of our participants, particularly in restaurants, hair salons, etc.
  5. Approach your local newspaper or radio for publicity.  Request that they include contact details or the www.curejm.org web site address (or your family’s personalized fundraising page) should someone want to make a donation to sponsor your efforts.

MOST EFFECTIVE FUNDRAISING APPROACH...INFORM ANYONE YOU KNOW AND ASK!

Sample Fundraising Communications

Below are a few sample fundraising communications.  Best results occur when you personalize your fundraising efforts based on your reason for involvement with our team.  Please customize and edit as you feel appropriate for your fundraising efforts.

Sample Communication – General

On July 21st, I will be (RUNNING OR VOLUNTEERING) in the XSport Fitness Rock 'n' Roll Chicago Half Marathon and Mini Marathon to raise funds for Cure JM (Juvenile Myositis) Foundation, a 501c(3) non-profit organization.

Cure JM Foundation was formed to find a cure for Juvenile Myositis, an orphan autoimmune disease affecting only about 2-3 children out of a million.  The disease can be debilitating and life-threatening by causing muscle weakness and pain, extreme fatigue, digestive difficulties, lung and heart problems, painful calcium deposits under the skin and a host of other side effects.  While some children will experience a remission, other will suffer Juvenile Myositis’ destructive effects their entire lives.  Some children will even die from complications of the disease.

I chose to (RUN OR VOLUNTEER) as a member of the Cure JM Team because….. (CUSTOMIZE TO YOUR SITUATION).

Please help us find a cure by donating.  Donations may be made online at (INSERT THE URL ADDRESS OF YOUR FAMILY'S PERSONALIZED FUNDRAISING PAGE) or by using the attached donation form.

Cure JM is a non-profit organization run entirely by Volunteers – therefore, nearly every dollar raised goes towards research.

I hope you will consider supporting our efforts by making a donation today.

Thanks for your time and your support of the thousands of children and their families in need of hope to conquer this rare disease.

Sample Communication for a Juvenile Myositis Family

I am writing you to ask for your help in finding a cure for Juvenile Myositis(JM).  JM is an orphan autoimmune disease affecting only about 2-3 children out of a million.  The disease can be debilitating and life-threatening by causing muscle weakness and pain, extreme fatigue, digestive difficulties, lung and hear problems, painful calcium deposits under the skin and a host of other side effects.

My  (INSERT AGE) year old (SON OR DAUGHTER), (JM CHILD NAME), is one of those children.

(You may want to insert some details regarding your child’s diagnosis. For example, approximate date of diagnosis, challenges since being diagnosed and current progress with treatment)

There is no cure for Juvenile Myositis and little funding for it. My hope is that we can change this through more research and awareness.  That is why I am asking you to support me and my work for the non-profit Cure JM Foundation (www.curejm.org)

I am (RUNNING OR VOLUNTEERING) as a member on our Cure JM charity team at the XSport Fitness Rock 'n' Roll Chicago Half Marathon and Mini Marathon on July 21st.

Attached is a donation flyer that explains more about Juvenile Myositis. Donations may be mailed in using the donation form or may be made online at (INSERT THE URL ADDRESS OF YOUR FAMILY'S PERSONALIZED FUNDRAISING PAGE).

I hope you will consider supporting our efforts by making a donation today.

Thanks for your time and your support of my (SON OR DAUGHTER) and the other thousands of children and their families in need of hope to conquer this rare disease.
